barnard-rae house

Nestled on the sloping hills of Denmark, this custom-designed home by Benson Design is a masterclass in mid-century modern aesthetic, passive solar innovation, and a deeply integrated biophilic design vibe. The clever split-level layout effortlessly hugs the natural contours of the land to create a striking, low-profile North Elevation while optimising functionality for modern, nature-connected living. At the heart of the house is a recessed central garden courtyard and atrium specifically designed to blur the lines between inside and out. This central oasis floods the active living zones with natural sunlight, enhances passive solar heating, and brings the wilderness indoors with dedicated space for thriving indoor plants. It creates a spectacular, living indoor/outdoor connection where large sliding doors can either seamlessly open the entire home into a breezy, sun-drenched pavilion or close to provide cozy, quiet separation while keeping views of nature fully intact. The intelligently zoned floor plan balances private and social spaces, featuring a secluded main bedroom suite with a window seat that invites the landscape inside, an open-plan kitchen and sitting area wrapping the central atrium, and a separate split-level wing containing three additional bedrooms, an activity room, and a home office, all perfectly positioned to look out onto the surrounding environment.

“We approached Benson Design with (what we thought was a flat block) and a dream. As a family of four with two large dogs, we wanted more space, fewer draughts, and a few special touches. Keiron and Hollie were enthusiastic and engaged from the first phone call, and we loved the guided design brief process. With creativity and great style, Keiron guided us through a fairly streamlined design process.

As a neurodivergent family, we were keen to explore acoustic materials to dampen noise (while also sticking to a budget of course) and Keiron had lots of ideas.

Our build is now underway, and we know Keiron and Hollie have got our backs when it comes to any questions that may crop up. We’re totally thrilled with the design and can’t wait to see it rise up from the (entirely not flat) block and turn into our new home.”
