The Concept

Perched elegantly above the rugged landscape of Denmark, the Herbert Residence is a study in elevated living. Designed to exist in harmony with its environment, the home acts as a floating pavilion, allowing the native bushland and coastal horizon to flow seamlessly beneath and around the structure.

This residence prioritises connection—both to the site and to the elements. By lifting the living spaces on a lightweight prefabricated steel foundation, the design minimises the footprint on the earth while maximising the outlook, creating a vantage point that feels private, secure, and entirely immersed in the natural beauty of the Great Southern region.

The Design

The architecture is defined by its clean, linear silhouette and a refined natural material palette that grounds the home in its surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling glass spans the length of the main view elevation, dissolving the barrier between the interior and the outdoors. This transparency invites the soft, filtered light of the forest into the home, shifting the mood throughout the day.

Inside, the living space is anchored by a warm, timber-slatted ceiling—a tactile feature that creates an acoustic and visual softness. The open-plan layout centres around a feature fireplace, offering a hearth for gathering during cooler south coast months, while the seamless transition to the cantilevered deck provides a dramatic, open-air living space that captures the evening light.
