Benson Design (ABN 52 021 756 782) (“Benson Design”, “we”, “us”) is a residential and commercial building design studio based in Albany, Western Australia. We respect your privacy and handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

This policy explains what we collect, why, how we keep it, and how to contact us about it.

What we collect

When you contact us through this website we collect what you choose to give us in the form: your name, email address, phone number, the address of your property or site, and your message.

When you engage us to design a building we collect what the project needs: your contact details, the property address and title details, site information such as surveys and photographs, your brief and design preferences, and the details needed to invoice you. We may also hold documents you give us from other consultants, councils or builders.

When you browse this website our hosting provider, Squarespace, and Google Analytics collect standard technical information such as your device type, browser, approximate location and the pages you visit. This is aggregated and does not identify you personally. You can block cookies in your browser settings.

We do not collect sensitive information such as health or financial account details unless you give it to us for a specific reason, for example accessibility requirements that affect a design.

Why we collect it

To answer your enquiry and talk with you about your project. To design, document and obtain approvals for your building, which includes preparing drawings and applications that carry your name and property details. To engage and coordinate the consultants your project needs, such as surveyors, structural engineers, energy and bushfire assessors. To invoice you and keep the records we are required to keep. To keep in touch about your project and, if you have agreed, about our work generally.

We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising to third parties.

Who we share it with

Only as the project requires. Consultants, builders and trades working on your project, with the details they need to do their part. Councils, building surveyors and other authorities, when we lodge applications on your behalf and with your agreement. Service providers that run our studio systems: Google Workspace (email, documents and file storage), Squarespace (this website), Basecamp (project management), Ruddr (time and invoicing), Xero (accounting) and Docusign (signatures). Some of these providers store data on servers outside Australia, including in the United States. We choose providers with recognised security practices and we only share what the service needs.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it.

How we keep it

Your information is stored in the systems above, protected by passwords, two-factor authentication and the providers’ own security. Project records are kept for at least seven years after a project closes, because building documentation is often needed long after completion. You can ask us to delete information we no longer need to keep.

Photographs and published work

We photograph completed projects and may publish them on this website, on social media and in award entries. We do this with the owner’s permission. If you would prefer your home not be shown, or want it shown without the street address or your name, tell us and we will respect that.

Your rights

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it where we are not required to keep it. Write to us at the address below and we will respond within 30 days.

If you believe we have mishandled your information, contact us first so we can put it right. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at www.oaic.gov.au.
